Former NICL Chief arrested in mega land scam case

Islamabad Politics Report/Alladad SadiqueSupreme Court (SC) on Sunday ordered to arrest former chairman of National Insurance Corporation Limited (NICL), Ayaz Khan Niazi, in mega land scam case.

The NICL case pertains to financial fraud by Niazi, then commerce leader (late) Makhdoom Amin Faheem, and several other officials in the purchase of official land.

Hearing the case on non-implementation of the court’s verdict in the NICL scam from five years ago, a two-member bench of Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising  Justice Mushir Alam ordered the accountability courts of Karachi and Lahore to decide the case within two months.

The top court also ordered the immediate arrest of other prime accused, Mohsin Habib Warraich.

During the hearing, the chief justice observed that Niazi is living in a two-Kanal house and his car is also not registered on his name.

Currently, Niazi is on bail in cases filed against him. However, with the transfer of the cases to National Accountability Bureau (NAB) from Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), his bail stood cancelled.

Earlier, this month the top court ordered NAB to submit a progress report on the steps taken to implement its 2013 judgment on NICL case.

The court had wondered why Niazi and Warraich had not been arrested yet.
