Islamabad Politics Report/Moazzam Raza Tabassam: The PPP leadership has not yet decided which one PPP will participate in the election 2018.
At present, two parallel political organisations of the same party exist simultaneously. One headed by the father and the other one by the son.
The PPP-P, now headed by Asif Zardari, is into electoral politics since 2002 under the guidance of mother party, the PPP headed by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
While inviting applications from candidates for the general elections this year to the National and all provincial Assemblies, Secretary General of Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians Farhatullah Babar was annouced that applications for the ticket should be addressed to the President of Pakistan People Party Parliamentarians and accompanied with a Bank draft of Rupees thirty thousands in the name of PPPP.
“Although, a Alliance of Bilawal Bhutto’s PPP and PPP-Parliamentarians of Asif Ali Zardari have been registered, but the party is planning to use PPP-Parliamentarians platform in the up comming elections”, a credible source in party told Islamabad Politics website editor.
On August 23, 2017, the Election Commission had allowed the PPP candidate from NA-120, Faisal Mir to contest election on the common election symbol of Arrow after accepting an application jointly filed by the PPP and the PPP-P that they had formed an election alliance and their candidate may be allowed to contest on a common symbol.
In a petition earlier filed in the Supreme Court, Naheed Khan had claimed herself to be the rightful heir to the political legacy of Z.A Bhutto and her daughter Benazir Bhutto.
In her another application submitted in ECP through Finance Secretary, Inbne Rizvi, she had contended that the issue of ownership of the PPP is pending adjudication in the Supreme Court of Pakistan and the Election Commission had no authority to proceed further in the matter till final adjudication.
Naheed Khan has further pleaded that the alleged permission granted to the PPP and the PPP-P to make an election alliance will prejudice her case in the Supreme Court.
” The Party leadership fears that the Election Commission can prevent them from participating in election2018 if PPP’s name is used”, Party source said.
Secondly, he added, ” the PPP-P has its representation in the Senate as well and disbanding this party at this stage may have its legal implications”.
In the current situation, when party leadership is concerned, it is more likely that Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will take part in the election 2018 from PPP’s parliamentarians platform.
Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s founded party, PPP fought election for the last time in 1997, led by Benazir Bhutto.
In 2002, Gen Musharraf’s Military government had disqualified Benazir Bhutto. It also delegitimised her Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) which was forced to rename itself PPP-Parliamentarians (PPP-P), the name it still carries. But that did not eliminate either Progressive idealogy of Bhutto’s or Pakistan People’s Party.
