Islamabad Politics Report: A Joint Investigation Team (JIT) was formed on Sunday to probe the firing incidents at Supreme Court Justice Ijazul Ahsan’s Lahore residence.
Additional IG Muhammad Tahir will head the JIT, which will include DIG Investigation Sultan Chaudhry and representatives of the Military Intelligence (MI), Inter-Services Intelligence (IS), and Intelligence Bureau (IB), said the spokesperson of the Punjab Government. Officers of the Special Branch and Forensics Agency will also be part of the team.
Initial investigation report
According to the initial investigation report issued by the police, at around 10.45PM on April 14, Shift In Charge Pakistan Rangers VIP Venue Naik Abdur Razzaq reported that a stray bullet hit the upper collar of the main gate of a house in H Block Model Town in Lahore.
“Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) Crime Scene Unit was called to process the incident to analyze it forensically,” said the investigation report. “They collected the evidence (data, photographs, bullet slug).”
The incident’s report shall be furnished on Monday, said the Forensic Scientist Crime Scene Investigator Makhdoom Saad.
As per the preliminary spatial observations by Crime Scene Unit (CSU), the bullet could be stray and on the final stage of its parabolic trajectory fired from a distance, said the report, adding that a search operation has been conducted on the probable direction of the bullet trajectory.
A detailed forensic report will be provided by the Fire Arms and Tool Marks (FATM) Department of PFSA after completing the analysis of the submitted evidence.
Justice Ahsan often spends the weekend in Lahore, his hometown, where he, along with the chief justice, presides over several cases related to public welfare issues and other matters at the Lahore registry.
Justice Ahsan is also the monitoring judge of the ongoing corruption cases against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. He was part of the bench which disqualified Nawaz in the Panama Papers case last year.
He has also remained as the chief justice of the Lahore High Court.
Two separate firing incidents were reported at the residence of Supreme Court Justice Ijazul Ahsan earlier today.
A statement by the apex court had revealed that the judge’s Model Town residence was struck by bullets first late last night and then again early morning today.
The judge’s house is located very close to the residence of the Punjab chief minister and his son MNA Hamza Shehbaz, where there is visible police presence throughout the day.
Asif Ali Zardari demans high-level judicial probe
Former president and Pakistan Peoples Party leader Asif Ali Zardari called for a high-level judicial probe into the incident.
Following the incident, reports of condemnations poured in with the legal community announcing to wear black armbands in protest on Monday.
Moreover, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan said on Twitter that these “Sicilian-mafia-like tactics to pressurise senior judiciary are unacceptable in any democracy”. He added that the PTI stands firmly behind the judiciary and rule of law
Pakistan Army condemns firing incident
Pakistan Army on Sunday condemned the firing incidents at the residence of Justice Ijazul Ahsan, according to a statement by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
“Firing incident at the residence of Mr Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan is condemnable,” said the military’s media wing.
“All stakeholders should ensure [a] secure environment for [the] effective functioning of the state institutions and continue the efforts to consolidate improving peace and stability.”
