Islamabad Politics Report/Moazzam Raza Tabassam: The Election Commission issued the amendment schedule, under which nomination papers can be submitted from 4 to 8 June.
According to the Election Commission, the nomination papers will remain in accordance with the Election Act 2017. Apart from this, the final list of candidates will be announced on June 8.
Earlier today, the Supreme Court suspended the nullification of nomination forms of the electoral candidates for the upcoming general elections by Lahore High Court (LHC).
The apex court bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, announced the verdict after former speaker of National Assembly and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, and Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) filed petitions earlier in the day challenging the LHC’s rulings on the nomination forms.
During the court proceedings on Sunday, the petitioners’ counsel stated that LHC’s decision on nomination forms would delay elections, adding that they took the matter to Supreme Court as they did not want elections to be postponed.
The elections are feared to be delayed as the filing of nomination papers has been put on hold following LHC’s ruling. Earlier, the nomination papers were to be filed between June 2 and 6.
However, the CJP remarked that elections would be conducted as per the schedule on July 25.
